Fraser Island is a World Heritage-listed site, located on Australia’s eastern Queensland coast with stretching pure-white sands. At over 123km in length and 22km at its widest point, it’s currently the largest sand island in the world! So, how can you get there? The closest town to Fraser Island is Hervey Bay (37km away), and from here you can easily take a one-day Fraser Island tour and explore the area.
Although if you have more time, we’d suggest taking at least three days to discover all its magic, as there are so many sights and experiences to try that 24-hours simply isn’t enough. To make your trip planning run a little smoother, here’s our pick of the top attractions and the best things to do on Fraser Island…
- Lake Mckenzie – One of the best things you can do on your Fraser Island trip is to go for a swim in Lake Mckenzie.
- Whale watching – whale watching in this part of the world offers an amazing experience to get up close and personal with these magnificent animals. The Spirit of Hervey Bay is a company that runs tours out to see the whales and they guarantee sightings and even offer a full refund to a free return cruise if none are spotted on your trip
- Fraser Island Central Station – this area of Fraser Island has some beautiful rainforest and here there is a display that explains the development of the area throughout the year and also outlines the flora and fauna that live and grow here.
- Beach fishing – Onshore fishing is hugely popular on the eastern side of Fraser and the fish that are biting in the area really does depend on the season and the temperature of the water,
- Champagne Pools – The rock formation on the beachfront are in a spa-like shape that water gets caught in to create the perfect spot to swim, safe from the strong currents and tides.
- SS Maheno Shipwreck – There have been many shipwrecks on Fraser Island but the Maheno is by far the most popular and has become quite a tourist attraction for people visiting the island.
- Lake Wabby – this body of water has been created over the years from sand that has migrated and has blocked the flow of water from a coastal creek. Lake Wabby is now in a crescent-like shape and is another great spot for a dip.
- Indian Head Lookout – This lookout offers some absolutely magnificent views and is a very prime location for spotting marine life like sea turtles, dolphins and whales depending on the time of year.
- Eli Creek – is the largest creek on the eastern beach of Fraser Island and it is a beautiful spot for a swim or it is a great idea to bring lilos and you can sit back and let the creek slowly guide you back towards the beach.
- Kingfisher Bay Resort – If you are wanting a little break from camping then this eco-friendly resort is the place to be. The resort offers self-contained villas or hotel rooms and even has three restaurants on-site.
